Delighted that our work on the hepcidin/ferroportin axis in COPD was published this month. Trojan effort over the last four years by Elizabeth Perez who sadly moved onto pursue a Masters to achieve her long term goal of going to Medical School. Well done Elizabeth; we will miss you.
KEY POINTS
Cigarette Smoke reduces hepcidin levels in the lung, plasma, and urine of mice.
Cigarette smoke inhibits hepcidin production by murine AMs.
AMs from smokers and individuals with COPD have higher ferroportin.

A Big welcome to Dr. Niamh Williams who joined the Cloonan lab in August 2020. Niamh recently graduated with a Phd in immunometabolism from the School of Biochemistry and Immunology, Trinity College Dublin having completed her training in the Lab of Professor Luke O’Neill, Trinity College Dublin. Niamh is helping out the Cloonan lab in Dublin while she secures a post doctoral training position abroad in 2021.
Delighted to welcome Dr. Claire Healy to the lab as Senior Research Fellow! Claire is here to teach us about bugs to help us understand why individuals with COPD are more susceptible to Respiratory Infection. Claire brings a breadth of experience in Microbiology with her from her post doctoral training at Weill Cornell and from her PhD studies at UCD Dublin. She joined the Cloonan lab in May 2020 to understand more about the host response in the lung to infection and is working on obtaining her own funding to jump start her own independent research career in the near future.
June 2020 : Really happy to see this work out in Scientific Reports this month on the correlation between more iron levels in the extracellular milieu of the lung and risk for exacerbation in the SPIROMICS cohort. Thank you to SPIROMICS for allowing us to be a part of this extremely valuable longitudinal COPD patient cohort.
As our labs close and experiments stop; we are trying to do something small to help our friends and colleagues (including Bill) working on the frontlines in the MICU; we set up a gofund me to send these amazing teams hot and nutritious meals!
